Tennis can be played year round! It’s a great way to keep active, and see your fellow teammates. Here are some ideas for continuing to play and improve your game:

Individual/Group Lessons

Local tennis clubs offer lessons throughout the year. Dave Farmer, former Eastern Michigan University Womens Tennis Coach, is available for individual or group lessons. Best way to reach Dave is by email.

If you choose to take group lessons at a local tennis club, sessions range from 5-12 weeks; each session is 1 1/2 – 2 hours long. Clubs offer various levels of lessons, depending on ability. Check with each club to learn what lessons are available. Local clubs include:

Join a club

Joining a local tennis club allows junior players (18 years of age and younger) to take group and individual lessons at reduced costs, as well as benefit from member-only activities.

Each club has different policies for juniors, and require an annual fee. Depending on your needs, there’s a local tennis club that will offer you excellent junior training and court time.

For example, Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti provides:

  • reduced individual and group lesson costs for members
  • free walk-on court time (when courts available, no reservations allowed)

while Huron Valley Tennis Club’s Junior Excellence program provides:

  • reduced individual and group lesson costs for members
  • fee for hourly court time

Match Play

Farmington Tennis Club offers match play on Friday evenings from 4:30-6:30PM. Match play includes games, contests and matches. All play is supervised by Farmington professional staff. Check with Farmington Tennis Club for more information about match play; call 248.476.3246.

USTA Junior Team Tennis

Teams are forming now, and you need to sign up asap if you want to play USTA Team Tennis this season. Several Wildcats members have already signed up for teams.

Tournaments

One of the best ways to improve your game, and get more experience on the court, is to sign up to play tournaments. Tournaments are held year round, some tournaments are USTA sanctioned tournaments, others are local community tournaments.

Watch a College Tennis Match

Attending college tennis matches is free! They’re fast-paced, exciting, and inspiring to watch college tennis players. At many matches, fans can win prizes (t-shirts, etc.) and there’s always the opportunity to talk with college tennis players. Women’s tennis season is in the fall; men’s season is in the spring. Consider visiting your favorite Michigan college to watch some great tennis matches:

Consider USTA Junior Team Tennis, which begins this month at local tennis clubs.

USTA Junior Team Tennis has three age divisions, 18 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under; each age division has two ability levels, intermediate and advanced. Teams are co-ed; players must be USTA members to participate. A player doesn’t have to belong to any tennis club to play USTA Team Tennis.

Matches are played on the weekends, October through March. Teams travel to local clubs, playing both singles and doubles matches. Most players play one singles and one doubles match. Cost for participants is around $15/match which includes pizza and drink.
