For the parents who have asked how team members can continue to play and improve their tennis game, check out tennis opportunities outside of high school season.

Lots of different options exist for players wanting individual or group activities including lessons, tournaments, USTA junior team tennis, and match play at local clubs.

Huron Valley camp, optional practice, and pool party

The Plymouth High School Boys Tennis Team camp will be held Monday, August 17, 2009 to Friday, August 21, 2009 from 9:30am to noon at Huron Valley Tennis Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Directions and map to Huron Valley Tennis Club.

Cost for camp is $132/week. For players who aren’t able to play the entire week, Huron Valley offers a daily rate, if you make

Optional Practice

Coach Jim Tucker and Mr. Eric Batell will lead optional practices this week from 4:30pm to 6pm at the high school courts. Stop in for extra time on the courts, and tips for improving your game!

Pool Party

Many thanks to the Flemings who graciously offered to host a pool party at their house Tuesday, August 18th at 2pm. All tennis players are invited to attend the party. Bring your suit and towel. Feel free to bring snacks and drinks (no glass bottles please).

Maps will be handed out at the Huron Valley camp, or you can contact me for more information (webmaster) through the website contact form.

Suggestion: players may want to stop at your home after camp to eat lunch before coming to the pool party.

Fairlane Club tennis lesson specials

Looking to improve your tennis game before the end of the year? Check out the great lesson specials Fairlane Club in Dearborn has for November and December 2008.

Through December 31, 2008, all private lessons will be buy one and get one free (up to 3 people).

The junior membership rate at Fairlane Club is $30/month (six months), or $25/month (annual), which includes free walk-on at any time.

Cost for High School Tennis Camp at Huron Valley

The cost for the 9:30am to noon tennis camp at Huron Valley Tennis Club is $132 for the five days, Monday through Friday August 18 – August 22, 2008, or $28/day.

If the Wildcats tennis team member is already a member of Huron Valley Tennis Club, payment will be billed. If the team member is not a member of Huron Valley Tennis Club, payment is due the first day of camp (paid to Huron Valley Tennis Club).

Camp at Huron Valley Tennis Club begins August 18

Our time is confirmed; the PHS Boys Tennis Team camp will be held Monday, August 18, 2008 – Friday, August 22, 2008 from 9:30am – noon at Huron Valley Tennis Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

To give Huron Valley time to properly staff our camp and reserve the necessary number of courts, please register immediately for the Plymouth High School Boys Tennis Team camp by calling Huron Valley at 734-662-5514.

Forms due August 11 and camp

I spoke with Coach Kimball yesterday, and found out the forms are due the first day of practice, Monday, August 11. Students interested in joining the boys tennis team for Fall 2008 should turn in all the completed forms to Coach Kimball. Sorry for the confusion!

Many parents have contacted me about camp dates in August. Yes, there’s confusion! Huron Valley Tennis Club has one date/time, while we have posted a different date/time. When I spoke with Coach Kimball yesterday (July 18), he said he was still working with Huron Valley to set our dates. As soon as I hear from Coach Kimball on what the dates/times are for camp, I’ll update the website and send out a message to the mailing list with the info.

Summer camps and lessons

Do you want to improve your game before the fall season? Are you interested in securing a varsity spot on the high school team? Then consider signing up for the camps and lessons available at local tennis clubs, community colleges, as well as individual instruction by USPTA instructors. Here are a few options in our area:

Individual Instruction

Dave Farmer, Plymouth Wildcats Girls Tennis Coach, is offering individual lessons this summer. Dave is the former coach of the Eastern Michigan Women’s Tennis Team, and is currently the tennis pro at Farmington Tennis Club and Dearborn Racquet Club. Dave can be reached by email.

Huron Valley Tennis Club Tennis Camps

Huron Valley offers two different camps in the summer for high school players from June 16 to August 1. For more information, download the Huron Valley Tennis Club Spring/Summer brochure (PDF: 300K). Here are some details on the two camps:

Tournament Players Camp

The week-long camps are held Monday through Friday from 9:00am to noon. The camps are intended for serious tournament players pursuing a ranking or trying to improve current varsity singles position. Focus is on singles match play, strategy, and point play.

Huron Valley Tennis Club Member: $165/week, $34/day
Nonmember: $180/week, $37/day

High School Players Camp

The two-week camps meet Monday through Friday, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. The camp prepares players for junior varsity teams and players planning to make varsity teams. Drilling, video analysis, ball machine practice, optional inter-club match play, T-shirt, prizes.

Huron Valley Tennis Club Member: $225/session, $23/day
Nonmember: $240/session, $25/day

Schoolcraft College Junior Tennis Camps

Schoolcraft College in Livonia is offering camps for tournament level tennis players from June 16 to August 14. The camps are held each day, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. The camp provides conditioning, drilling on serves, volleys, overheads, ground strokes, and match play. Registration form (PDF: 88K) is available.

Cost: $125/session (one week)

Dearborn Tennis Expo – April 19, 2008

The Dearborn Community Tennis Association will hold its first tennis expo, Saturday, April 19th at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center from 1-4PM. High school students are invited to attend from 3-4PM. Cost is $5/student.

Spring Break tennis camps

For team members interesting in sharpening their tennis skills during spring break, Dearborn Racquet and Health Club is offering tennis camps on March 25, 26, 27, 2008 from 12PM-2PM each day.
